Dianah Kamande: African Inspiration
A story is told of a remarkable journey of resilience and transformation that began with one courageous voice. This is the story of Dianah Kamande, the Founder and Executive Director of Come Together Widows and Orphans Organization, whose journey began in personal turmoil. Having survived domestic violence, she faced the profound grief of widowhood—a dual tragedy that set her on a mission to make a difference in the lives of widows and orphans. In 2013, she established Come Together Widows and Orphans Organization with a clear vision to champion the rights and dignity of widows and orphans across Kenya, empowering them to thrive in all aspects of their lives—socially, legally, and economically.
Her academic journey has been a key pillar of her advocacy. Armed with a BA in Governance, Peace, and Conflict Studies from Africa Nazarene University and further studies in Community Development at Pan African Christian University, Dianah combined her personal experience with academic expertise to effect real change. In 2015, she made a significant step by presenting the Widows Agenda to Kenya’s State Department for Gender. She has also represented the Widows Agenda on global platforms and played a key role in the adoption of the UN Resolution Addressing Widowhood in 2022.
Her work has earned her widespread recognition, including the recognition and celebration of International Widows Day in Kenya since 2016 and a Head of State Commendation in 2018.
As a published author, Dianah shares her journey in Scars of Honor, a story of survival from Gender-Based Violence that serves as inspiration and healing for others. Currently, she serves as an Independent Board Director at the Anti-FGM Board, where she fights against the harmful practice of female genital mutilation. Dianah Kamande remains committed to ensuring widows and their children live lives of dignity and fulfillment.
